Q Experiment 13 - Solubility and Solution Concentration • Points 10 • Submitting a file upload Today we start Experiment 13. You can find a .pdf copy of the Experiment in the Laboratory Manual Module. This lab is considered a "wet lab", as we use chemicals and laboratory equipment to collect the data. This lab is designed to give you practice with a few important concepts from Chapter 13: • creating solutions, and predicting solubility based on "Similarity of Polarity" • observation of a supersaturated solution • calculation of the concentration of a solution using two methods: mass/mass percent, and Molarity In Part A, we mix various combinations of solute and solvent together to observe solubility. Physical observations are not practical for this lab via Distance Learning, so the "Virtual Observation" results have been provided in the Data Pages document below. In Part B, I demonstrate the destabilizing of a pre-made supersaturated solution of Sodium acetate. Watch the small video below to see an example of this rapid precipitation reaction. I didn't create this video, but it's a good example of what you would see in the lab for this part of the experiment. In Part C, we calculate the concentration of sodium chloride in a pre-made salt water solution, made from NaCl dissolved in water. In order to measure the concentration of the salt, we have to remove the water from the solution via careful heating and evaporation, leaving the solid NaCl behind. Using our data, we can calculate the mass of both the initial solution and the solid sodium chloride - for use in our concentration calculations. To help you work through the calculations today, I've included a small audio discussion. This small discussion will: • provide a brief description of the procedure for the data collection for Parts A, B, and C • provide a walk-through of how we use our data to complete the calculations and determine the mass/mass percentage concentration and the Molarity concentration of our NaCl solution You can use the same techniques to answer the questions in the postlab. Along with a copy of the discussion and white board notes, you can find the virtual data for this experiment below. Use this data to complete the calculations. All of the "wet lab" experiments this semester have 2 components: The Data Table pages, and the Postlab Questions. You need to complete both parts of the Experiment, and turn them both in as your lab report. Fill out the lab pages and save your work as a .pdf document, and submit your work using the Submit Assignment button at the top of the page.
